How To Protect Your Skin From The Sun During Chemo

Chemotherapy is a powerful treatment used to fight cancer. However, it can have several side effects, including making your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Sun exposure during chemotherapy treatment can cause further damage, including sunburn, skin irritation, and even skin cancer. Therefore, it's essential to protect yourself from the sun during chemotherapy treatment. Here are some tips to help you protect yourself from the sun:

Wear Protective Clothing

One of the best ways to protect yourself from the sun during chemotherapy treatment is to wear protective clothing. Choose clothing that covers your arms, legs, and neck. Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight clothing made from breathable materials such as cotton, linen, or bamboo.

Use Sunscreen

Sunscreen is a must when it comes to protecting yourself from the sun during chemotherapy treatment. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Apply sunscreen generously to all exposed skin, including your face, ears, neck, and hands. Reapply every two hours or more often if you are swimming or sweating.

Avoid the Sun during Peak Hours

The sun's rays are strongest during peak hours, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If possible, avoid going outside during these hours when the sun is at its strongest. If you need to go outside, wear protective clothing and use sunscreen.

Seek Shade

When outside during chemotherapy treatment, try to stay in the shade as much as possible. Seek shelter under trees, umbrellas, or other structures that provide shade. Remember that shade alone is not enough to protect you from the sun's harmful rays, so still wear protective clothing and use sunscreen.

Wear a Hat

Wearing a hat is an excellent way to protect your face, scalp, and neck from the sun's harmful rays. Choose a hat with a brim wide enough to shade your face and neck. Hats made from lightweight, breathable materials such as cotton or straw are best.

Protect Your Eyes

The sun's rays can also damage your eyes during chemotherapy treatment. Wear sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection to protect your eyes from the sun's harmful rays. Wraparound sunglasses are ideal as they offer additional protection to the sides of your eyes.

Protecting yourself from the sun during chemotherapy treatment is essential. By following our tips, you can help reduce your risk of skin damage and protect your skin during your chemo journey.
